Facts About Frog Switch
|
What is a Frog?
 Frogs, switches,
and other railroad components were major products for this company for
nearly one hundred years.
A frog is a special section of rail that allows a
train to cross over or switch tracks. We no longer manufacture
frogs. |
- The company no longer manufactures its namesake, railroad frogs
and switches-- major products for over half a century.
- We serve a
global base of OEM's (original equipment manufacturers), metallic
mines and aggregate plants, and our castings are shipped all over
the world.
- An on-going plant modernization, in place since
the seventies, has given us a 100% increase in plant capacity,
ensuring our molding processes are the most technologically advanced
in the world.
- Frog Switch uses the two most advanced, environmentally
safe molding methods available: vacuum molding and the
sodium silicate no-bake sand system.
- According to customers, our premium alloys, WearWolf and SuperTech
24 provide the longest trouble-free wear they've ever experienced.
- See the Manganese Steel Specification sheet for more information.
- Also see the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) sheet for more information.
The History of The Frog, Switch & Manufacturing
Company
The expertise and service offered by The Frog, Switch &
Manufacturing Company is the culmination of 118 years of manufacturing experience.
Every one of those years has given us a little more knowledge and a little more experience,
the total of which has made us a world leader in manganese steel casting.
Our beginnings can be traced back to 1881 with Frog, Switch
located on the Jacob Zug farm where we can still be found today. Founding
father, John Hays, was a businessman, an
editor and publisher, an attorney, and a wise and courageous
entrepreneur. In 1898 he reorganized the Carlisle Manufacturing Company
into The Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company which went on to
become a leader in the manufacture of steel parts for railroads.
John Hays' character can be defined by his reaction to the
disastrous fire that ravaged the Frog, Switch company in 1909: To our
workmen: In the misfortune that overtook our works early this morning, you
are probably more affected than the Company. The Company has insurance...but
there is no insurance for workmen against idleness...we will give as many of
you as much work as we can, and as rapidly as possible the works will be
rebuilt, and you will have an opportunity for re-employment...
By the end of the sixties, the railroad parts were phased out
and more profitable crushing and grinding wear parts were introduced. This
positioned Frog, Switch to become one of the dominant players in the North
American ore and aggregate mining industries.
In response to a flood of foreign imports, Frog, Switch embarked
on an aggressive export program which resulted in large-scale global recognition.
Our subsequent long-term modernization of the Frog, Switch plant has brought us proudly
into the new millennium as a world leader in the industry.
